Let me share a story.

I was playing a game of “Uno Attack” with a four-year old (Alex), a six-year old (Ian), and an eight-year old (Jacob).

Uno Attack is a card game where the objective is to be the first to lose all your cards. If you are unable to play a matching number or color, you must push a button on the game mechanism and it may (or may not) launch a bunch of cards towards you, which you must add to your hand (a bad thing…)

Alex just wanted to push the button, whether or not it was necessary. Ian wanted to be on my team, even though Uno is not a team game. Jacob kept peeking in the hands of other players.

I instructed them all in the rules of the game (only push the button when you can’t discard, there are no teams, don’t peek in other’s hands), and spent much of the game enforcing the rules.

Everyone had a great time (it’s a really fun game), but I learned some important lessons.

Alex didn’t care about the rules. He just wanted to have fun.

Ian didn’t care about the rules. He just wanted to feel that someone was on his side (his “team”), so he wouldn’t be alone.

Jacob didn’t care about the rules either. He just wanted to win.

I had fun, but I would have had more fun if I had ignored the rules. And afterwards, I felt very bad that I had not agreed to be on Ian’s “team” when he was so clearly reaching out for connection.

So I learned… “If you want to have fun, break the rules!” Life is too short – if you have to choose between rules and fun, choose fun. Join up in teams to break the rules so everyone feels closer and no one feels alone.
