I find this entire situation fascinating.

First I would like to agree with this statement made;
"Yes, probably most marriages have issues that could lead to affairs, if at least one of the partners is not aware/conscious, open and honest enough to do something about their feelings BEFORE they take actions to betray their partner. Young marriages with young children are stressful. Was that a part of Tiger’s infidelity? "perhaps it’s true that his infidelity was more about entitlement. I suspect his infidelity is a combination of genetic influences – his dad apparently strayed in his marriage more than once – AND immaturity – AND the fact he had become too too famous and rich – it went to his head. He basically said that yesterday."

Now to the part I disagree with:
I disagree with Rachel Maddow who last night as well said basically that none of it is our business.

I kind of agree with Rachel on this point. I know this is not a popular opinion , however, I feel unless someone is in an elected position - think Gov Mark Stanford, John Edwards etc I do not think it is our business. I understand that sports figures are role models, however it is up to them to decide if they want to apologize, they do not owe us anything, we choose to support them and give them our money.

I am concerned with people like Bernie Maddox Michael Milken who robbed hundreds of people or were involved with insider trading, AIG and other corporate executives stealing from the public. Milken went to jail and is now teaching a class on corporate integrity has he really learned enough to be teaching that class? I am concerned with Michael Vick and his animal abuse issues. We for the most part have a voyeuristic relationship with the rich and famous. Think Celebrity Detox with Dr Drew, Dr Phil, Life Styles of the Rich and Famous... etc.

I think wealthy powerful men live by a different set of rules then the rest of men do, and that is because the woman they are with allow it for the most part. I think this is an issue between Tiger and his wife, their lawyers etc. I am not sure I believe that Elgin had no idea what Tiger was up too, maybe she did not know the extent of his sex addiction or the number of mistresses he had, however, I am sure she knew something and it finally came to a head the night of the accident. My dad was not rich but he was a serial cheater, and I knew it by the time I was 12 years old. No one told me, I just knew it, my mom knew it but pretended she did not because she was afraid to leave with 3 small children.

I feel sorry for his children. I think he maybe owed an apology to the children who looked up to him , for letting them down.

And I find all the woman now ready to sell their stories to the media, shake him down for money more distasteful then what Tiger did. They all knew he was married and did it for the money , gifts and fun they had with him and now they want to make more money from this. This is where I blame the media, why is the media even giving them any coverage, this belongs on the front page of the Enquirer, not reputable papers or news networks.

I am sure Tiger has sex addiction problems the same as Michael Douglas, the Kennedy brothers and hundreds of men we do not hear about. Maybe dealing with this issue in schools might help, teaching young people about love, keeping your word, integrity and what it means to be married.

I , too, am not sure monogamy is a natural state for men, or maybe even woman. I think it is a choice you make every day. It is also a matter of emotional maturity as we have learned in Randy's books!

I think his being married is the main problem with his behavior, it is not for me to judge what another does or likes sexually.

OK, sorry end of my rant.. LOL. I would just like to see Tiger back playing golf and getting the help he needs to understand the repercussions of his actions and where in his childhood they came from.

Look at the famous musicians who died or destroyed themselves from too much money they earned at a very young age. Maybe people need to learn how to live with fame and fortune and maybe we need to stop putting them on pedestals. My hero's are the men and woman who went to Haiti, New Orleans and other first responders, people who are creating the new green energy. I think this is a problem with society not just Tiger's actions.

Fascinating subject. Everyone is all over the map on their thoughts about this. As someone who has seen the many destructive downsides of infidelity, in my own life and, particularly with clients, I may be biased.

Are people not naturally monogamous? Who knows. I think we can find the answers we are looking for, in the research, depending on what we want to find. We are not all physical beings, subject to the whims of impulse, if we choose to be more concerned about our committed partner's feelings, and if we are mature, ie: able to see ahead as to the possible ramifications of our behaviors.

If Tiger was being genuine during his 'apology', perhaps it's true that his infidelity was more about entitlement. I suspect his infidelity is a combination of genetic influences - his dad apparently strayed in his marriage more than once - AND immaturity - AND the fact he had become too too famous and rich - it went to his head. He basically said that yesterday.

Yes, probably most marriages have issues that could lead to affairs, if at least one of the partners is not aware/conscious, open and honest enough to do something about their feelings BEFORE they take actions to betray their partner. Young marriages with young children are stressful. Was that a part of Tiger's infidelity?

Now, as far as the 'where do you draw the line' between the public and private? That's a hard one too. Part of me says Tiger doesn't need to talk about his personal life with anyone. But then, as Keith Olbermann from MSNBC said last night - something to the effect of he is somewhat responsible to the public, given he is taking money from it - if that is so, I think Tiger is doing a good job of balancing giving the public more information (yes, we are voyeuruistic, but it's not all bad - perhaps we can learn from his situation) but drawing a line.

I disagree with Rachel Maddow who last night as well said basically that none of it is our business. Part of accountability to others is that we live in a world that stays somewhat ordered (yes I say that somewhat tongue-in-cheek) because of being accountable to one another. I have to agree more with Dr. Drew Pinski on that. He's concerned about whether Tiger is controlling his treatment process too much, because of who he is.

I do find it interesting that Tiger's wife, Elin, was noticeably absent.

Thanks for the opportunity to discuss Randy!

I believe that Tirger is acting responsibly in dealing with his emotional immaturity,
1. He is admitting his problem...ownership
2. He is seeking help and taking the action to deal with his problem
3. He is asking for forgiveness
4. He is willing to change.

If he seeks God's help and does the work, he will grow spiritually and deliver an beautiful example to mankind. He is in my prayers.

I agree with your criticism of the media attack on this man. However, I don't agree with you conclusions that we should have deeper comments from the media. I think that this type of voyeurism is indicative of something very pathological embedded in our general culture. That is what we need to be concerned with not the reasons for Tiger Woods affair.

Tiger Woods having an affair has no effect on anyone but those immediately involved and therefore it's none of our business. It is not as if the rest of us have everything together in our relationships that we have left over time to be negatively commenting on or analyzing other peoples personal lives.

Sorry I am not in your corner here. I say cut the man some slack and lets live our own lives directly not though watching celebrities lives.

It seems to me society has two standards. The rich always seem to get away with straying. Bill Clinton, Tiger woods, that other politician who was caught in DC with a prostitute ...

I'm seeing an employee at work stray in his marriage, and its interesting to think whether the burden of emotional guilt caused by this act of dishonesty is worth the pleasure he gets out of this.

Interesting blog. Eric From in his book The art of loving, points out two things: 1) That love is both an act of will ( a decision) as well as an act that depends on unique characteristics that attracts us to a person.

By that definition, the maturity you mention is probably related to the conscious act of will. The chemistry you mention is related to the attraction caused by unique characteristics between two people.

I am still not clear though, when people say 'love is not a feeling', are they not ignoring the romantic chemistry component ?

Thanks for opening the conversation, Randy
Having been through this myself along with a close friend and my sister amongst others, I can say it's the lies that are most hurtful. Most consciously aware women 'know' when their mates are straying. The issue is hurtful, yes, but nothing is worse than being lied to when we ask to have open honesty. I chose not to leave the man I was with until he decided he wanted to marry the other.
Would you like to talk about a growth experience there?
I am grateful for what he taught me. I have a deeper understanding of real love beyond my ego needs (and his). I now choose to be with a partner who I am certain wants to be monogamous and I am not as attached to it as I was before (either because I don't need to be or because I am not looking for it).
I DO require absolute honesty now and he knows this. We have open conversation about our sexual attractions and 'opportunities' not taken.
Tiger gave us all a gift in that we can openly exchange meaningful dialog with our mates and find out what we are made of.
There is truly nothing new under the sun :-)

Randy, you're correct that the issue isn't “What’s wrong with Tiger Woods?” or “Is he a sex addict?” but I also wouldn't see the issue as “What’s wrong with our supposedly monogamous society?” either. The issue IS Tiger is a married man who is completely free to make choices and made the sad choice to cheat on his spouse who he signed a verbal, written and emotional contract with. Yes, it is true that some in our species find it difficult to be monogamous but it is also completely true and possible for many to find it easy to be monogamous. It's a choice that mature adults have to decide. "Do I want to commit my life solely to this other being or do I want to 'play the field''? The answer should dictate whether that individual gets married. When two people agree to commit their lives to one another through the tradition of marriage the expectation is it will be monogamous. As lucid free thinking adults they also have the ability to choose to have a "open relationship". BUT it doesn't seem "poor" Elin was part of that decision. Just because it's hard to be monogamous isn't an excuse for lying too and hurting the people you say you love!

I believe one needs to be very careful about handling love and problems.
Even the best of relationships may not recover from Tiger Issues. I would
not be able to have him in my life again, rebuilding trust would take forever, maybe never. Cheaters are not allowed for a second round w/me. Just house rules....
